“….brings a deep and infectious enthusiasm, combined with insight and technical comfort”
CD RTE Lyricfm
This is the CD debut of young Dublin-born pianist Fiachra Garvey, who won the Brennan Prize for best-placed Irish competitor at the Dublin International Piano Competition in 2009. That success was based on his performance of Samuel Barber’s 1949 Piano Sonata, which is included here. Garvey’s maturing expressiveness and facility is evident in stylish accounts of Debussy’s Pour le Piano and Schumann’s Fantasiestücke Op12. But the highlight is the Barber Sonata, composed for the towering virtuoso Vladimir Horowitz. Crucially, Garvey doesn’t make it sound like a competition piece, but brings a deep and infectious enthusiasm, combined with insight and technical comfort. This should win new friends for Barber as well as for himself.
